How to Write Better English Sentences: From Simple to Advanced

When I was teaching academic writing at the university, I noticed one common problem: students knew vocabulary, but they couldn’t build strong sentences. So I created a step-by-step plan — start with the basics, then level up.

Today, I’m sharing that same system with you. Let’s transform your writing from basic to academic.

Level 1: The Simple Sentence – Your Foundation

Every English sentence starts here. A simple sentence is not about length — it’s about having ONE independent clause with a clear pattern:

S + V + O = Subject + Verb + Object

Example: The new product is expensive.

  • S (Subject): The new product (What are we talking about?)
  • V (Verb): is (What is it doing?)
  • O (Object/Complement): expensive (Information about the subject)

Unique Example for Practice: My younger sister loves online courses.
Simple, clear, and complete. But you can’t write an entire essay with only this.

Level 2: The Compound Sentence – Join Two Ideas

A compound sentence joins TWO simple sentences (independent clauses) with a connector.

Formula 1: Basic Compound

S-V-O , and / but / so + S-V-O

Unique Examples:

  • My younger sister loves online courses, and she completes one every month.
  • My younger sister loves online courses, but she struggles to stay focused.
  • My younger sister loves online courses, so she rarely watches TV.

Formula 2: Advanced Compound (For Higher Bands in IELTS/TOEFL)
Replace the comma + and/but/so with a semicolon. Use however, therefore, moreover.

S-V-O ; S-V-O
S-V-O **; however, ** S-V-O

Upgraded Examples:

  • My younger sister loves online courses; not many teenagers are so self-motivated.
  • My younger sister loves online courses; however, she struggles to stay focused.
  • My younger sister loves online courses; therefore, she rarely watches TV.

Pro Tip: Always put a comma after however, therefore, moreover in this pattern!

Level 3: The Complex Sentence – Show Relationship

A complex sentence combines ONE independent clause + ONE dependent clause using words like because, although, since, when, while, if, as.

These words show why, when, or how two ideas are connected.

Pattern A: Independent + Dependent

Not many teenagers are self-motivated because my younger sister loves online courses.

Pattern B: Dependent + Independent (More Academic)

Because my younger sister loves online courses, not many teenagers are as self-motivated as her.

More Unique Examples:

  • Although online courses are affordable, many students fail to complete them. (Shows contrast)
  • Since online courses require self-discipline, students need good time management.

Level 4: The Compound-Complex Sentence – The Master Level

This is where you prove you are an advanced writer. It combines TWO independent clauses + at least ONE dependent clause.

This is the sentence type examiners love to see!

Formula:

Because/Although/Since + S-V-O, S-V-O ; however/therefore, S-V-O

Let’s Build It Step-by-Step with 3 Simple Ideas:

  1. Online courses are affordable.
  2. Not many students complete them.
  3. They need strong motivation.

Master Sentence 1:

Because online courses are affordable, not many people take them seriously; however, they require strong self-motivation to complete.

Master Sentence 2:

*Because online courses are affordable, not many students complete them; therefore, universities should provide better mentoring.

One More Advanced Trick: Using “which” and “as”

  • The new online course, which is quite affordable, will need better marketing to increase enrollment.
  • Not many students can afford the premium course as it is expensive; therefore, a scholarship program is essential.

Practice Plan to Write Better Sentences

Don’t just read — practice!

Day 1: Write 5 simple S-V-O sentences about your daily life.
Day 2: Take those 5 sentences and make them compound with and, but, so.
Day 3: Upgrade them to advanced compound with ; however, ; therefore,
Day 4: Transform them into complex sentences with because, although, since.
Day 5: Combine them into compound-complex master sentences.
