Stop Saying “A Lot Of”: Master the Word Family of Abundance, Abundant & Abundantly with Examples
Have you ever used “a lot of” in your writing and wondered if there was a better, more academic way to say it?
“A lot of” is basic. It’s okay for speaking, but for IELTS Writing Task 2, university essays, and professional reports, you need higher-level vocabulary. The perfect upgrade is the word family: abundance, abundant, abundantly.
Let’s master all three!
1. ABUNDANCE (Noun) – A Large Quantity
Part of Speech: Noun
Meaning: A very large quantity; plenty; more than enough of something.
Pronunciation: /əˈbʌn.dəns/
Grammar: an abundance of + noun
This is your replacement for “a lot of” in formal writing.
Transcript Example: “The abundance of natural resources contributes to the country’s economy.”
Unique New Examples:
- Bangladesh has an abundance of talented freelance designers, which helps the country earn foreign currency.
- Unlike 20 years ago, we now have an abundance of free online tools to learn English — YouTube, podcasts, and AI tutors.
- The old professor had an abundance of real-life stories, so his classes were never boring.
Pro Tip: Don’t use it for negative things. We don’t say “an abundance of problems” — say “a large number of problems.” Abundance is almost always positive.
2. ABUNDANT (Adjective) – Existing in Large Amounts
Part of Speech: Adjective
Meaning: Existing in large amounts; more than enough; plentiful.
Grammar: It goes BEFORE a noun: abundant resources, abundant evidence, abundant opportunities.
Transcript Example: “The abundant natural resources of the country contributes to its economy.”
Unique New Examples:
- Solar energy is abundant and free — we just need better technology to store it efficiently.
- There is abundant evidence that regular reading improves your writing skills dramatically.
- In Rangpur, mangoes are abundant during the summer season, so the price becomes very cheap.
IELTS Upgrade Formula:
- Weak: “There are a lot of natural resources…”
- Strong: “There are abundant natural resources…” or “The country has abundant natural resources…”
3. ABUNDANTLY (Adverb) – In a Plentiful Way
Part of Speech: Adverb
Meaning: In large quantities; very much; in a way that is very clear or obvious.
This is the most advanced form, and native speakers use it in two fixed, powerful phrases you should memorize:
Phrase 1: ABUNDANTLY CLEAR (Very obvious)
- It is abundantly clear that hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.
- After watching his presentation, it became abundantly clear that he hadn’t prepared at all.
- Unique Example: It is abundantly clear from the data that online businesses will continue to grow in 2026.
Phrase 2: ABUNDANTLY AVAILABLE / ABUNDANTLY SUPPLIED
- This material is abundantly available in the local area, so production costs are low.
- Fresh vegetables are abundantly available in the village market during winter.
- Free Wi-Fi is now abundantly available in most cafes in Dhaka.
Master Sentence: Using All Three Together!
Here’s a powerful sentence that uses the whole family — just like in the video:

Let’s make an even better, unique version for you to use:
