🔍 Quick Look: Let’s See It In Action
Look at these examples to see how we use the present simple in everyday English:
- 🍎 I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables. (A regular habit)
- 📱 My dad phones me every day. (A daily routine)
- 💼 She doesn’t like her job. (A general truth/feeling)
- ⏰ What time do you get up at weekends? (A question about a habit)
💡 The Ultimate Grammar Explanation
We use the present simple tense for two primary reasons: to talk about things we do regularly (habits and routines) or to state things which are generally true (facts).
🔄 1. Habits and Routines
We use it for actions that happen again and again.
- 🏋️♂️ I go to the gym three times a week.
- ☕ We drink coffee at work.
- 🐕 My dog goes for a walk every morning.
🌍 2. General Truths and Facts
We use it for situations, feelings, or facts that are true now and usually don’t change quickly.
- ❤️ She loves her job.
- 🏠 A lot of people work at home now.
- 🏢 He has a flat in the city centre.
🎯 Formulating the Present Simple
👤 The “He, She, It” Rule (Third Person Singular)
The most important rule to remember is that we must add -s or -es to the base verb when the subject is he, she, or it.
- 📺 My favourite TV show starts at 8 o’clock.
- ⏰ She finishes work early on Fridays. (Add -es for verbs ending in -sh, -ch, -x, -ss, -o)
🔤 Spelling Change: When a verb ends in a consonant + y, we change the y to i and add -es.
- 📚 My brother studies at university. (study ➔ studies)
⚡ Irregular Forms: The third-person forms for have, do, and go are irregular.
- He has a car. (not haves)
- She does yoga on Tuesdays. (not dos)
- He goes to school. (not gos)
📊 Quick Reference Table: Affirmative, Negative, and Questions
| Subject | 🟢 Affirmative (Positive) | 🔴 Negative | ❓ Question |
| I | I like ice cream. | I don’t like ice cream. | Do I like ice cream? |
| You | You go to the gym. | You don’t go to the gym. | Do you go to the gym? |
| He / She / It | He/She/It eats meat. | He/She/It doesn’t eat meat. | Does he/she/it eat meat? |
| We | We watch a lot of films. | We don’t watch a lot of films. | Do we watch a lot of films? |
| They | They work at home. | They don’t work at home. | Do they work at home? |
⛔ Creating Negatives
To make a sentence negative, use don’t (do not) or doesn’t (does not) before the base verb.
- 🥩 We don’t eat meat.
- ⏳ She doesn’t have a lot of free time. (Notice that after “doesn’t”, the verb changes back to the base form “have”, not “has”)
❓ Creating Questions
To ask a question, put Do or Does at the very beginning of the sentence (before the subject).
- 🎬 Do you watch a lot of films?
- 🗣️ Does he speak English? (Notice the verb is “speak”, not “speaks”)
🗣️ How to Answer Questions
1. Short Answers
In English, we rarely just say “Yes” or “No”. We use short answers to sound more natural and polite.
- 🧀 Do you like cheese? ➔ Yes, I do. / No, I don’t.
- ⚽ Does she play football on Saturdays? ➔ Yes, she does. / No, she doesn’t.
2. Questions with Question Words (Wh- Questions)
If you want to find out more specific information, place question words like what, where, who, or what time before do or does.
- 🏢 Where do you work?
- 🍽️ What time does he have lunch?
- ✈️ When do they arrive?
